Another Tawny Coster sighting!
The Tawny Coster, a newcomer to Australia, was first recorded in our city during Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count at Boondall Wetlands in February 2021. The second season of our surveys has now seen the butterfly at Moggill Conservation Reserve. It's here to stay.
The Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore), a newcomer to Brisbane, was first recorded in our city during Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count at Boondall Wetlands in February 2021. The second season of our surveys has now seen the butterfly at Moggill Conservation Reserve. We are certain it'll become a permanent resident of Brisbane.
We were excited when we could report the first ever sighting of the butterfly in Brisbane in February of this year. We are equally thrilled to now have a record from a completely different area of our city, namely the outer western suburbs of Brisbane.
Considering that the butterfly uses the same habitat type and the same larval host plants (Passionflower vines - Passiflora spp) as our native Glasswing butterfly (Acraea andromacha), it shouldn't take too long before we encounter the Tawny Coster in other parts of Brisbane. Keep your eyes out, and let us know if you spot it.
Please check out more Tawny Coster information under Resources on this website.
